Treasures among the nonsense

I was cleaning out my closet drawer,
Where miscellaneous items were kept.
Hair bands, socks and bits of nonsense galore.
But deep down an unknown treasure slept,
It was a weathered yellow paper that stirred
Memories of a gentleman, I cared for long ago.
Over thirty years had passed since I read his word.
He has been gone to meet his God, I know
I recall the man who said he was agnostic.
I didn’t believe it then and I don't now,
Forgive me I don't mean to sound caustic.
But, I recall he was a gentle person of distinction.
Who wrote poetry of moving inspiration?
And called upon his Savior for salvation.

["In the town of West Texas
That's known as Loraine,
There is a little church yard
And I'll go there again.
To the old tabernacle
And there by the Altar of God,
I will kneel in the dust
Where the sinners have trod"]

Are these the words of a non-believer ?
I think not, rather and over achiever.
I feel blessed to have known this man.
For certainly it was part of God's Master plan.
