The little girl sat on her grandmother's lap.
When she awoke from a little catnap,
A glint of shiny gold caught her eye.
Which brought the prospective question "Why?"
The child was full of questions about the key.
That hung around Nana's neck so delicately,
"That my dear is the key to the latch of my heart;
It reminds me to open that little part,
Where precious memories are stored away.
And I can relive them another day."
"But Grandma!" the child said with alarm.
"If you open your heart will it do you harm?"
"No, my darling, that is just figuratively speaking.
That means kind of like make believe thinking"
"Oh Nana aren't hearts a wonderful thing?
Look at all the joy they can bring."
This brought a smile to the grandmother's face,
The little child snuggled down in her place.
She gently stroked her baby fine hair.
She didn't realize how much she was there
Tucked away with tender love in her heart,
The child had been there right from the start.
