As the young boy starred off into space.
His thoughts were of a faraway place.
The ocean beckoned for him to one day.
Board a tall ship and sail away.
Somehow the sailors life seemed to be,
Just the ticket to sail the open sea.
Life on land was certainly great,
But his dream was to be a ship's mate.
His father and uncles had all gone to sea
They told him what a hard life it could be.
Hard work did not scare this sturdy lad
For even that did not seem so bad.
Someday he would venture out
He would be a sailor have no doubt.
However, he would leave his trusty dog behind
For Jeb his dog was old and nearly blind
Perhaps by then he would have gone to heaven
For in human years he was almost eleven.
For the moment he had to say good-bye to the seashore
He'll be back another day to dream some more.
