Geronimo's Tales by Carol G Oliver

The First Joint Assignment

Geronimo finally got home from visiting with all the wonderful folks in Maine. He especially enjoyed his visit with the children big and little. He learned so much from Rick about the big people's world and all their gadgets. Just then he got e-mail from Rick saying, "Did you check your bag?" Curiosity got a hold of him and he went to get the bag he always carried his angel wings in and tucked inside the lining he found a miniature cell phone. Of course this meant that he had to call Rick to tell him thank you. He dialed the number loaded in to the phone and at the end he heard ring! ring !ring!-------------Then a booming voice saying" Hello this is Rick's answering service please leave a message and I will call you back?"
Well, heck thought Geronimo what if this was an emergency, which of course it wasn't. So he left a message to call him back, After all he wanted to thank him for his thoughtfulness in procuring a miniature cell phone.

He was just pondering the whole situation when angel fairy approached him and wanted to see this amazing gift. She jumped up and down with excitement and Geronimo thought to himself I really must teach her the jig, she is always hopping about with wasted energy might as well look good when she does her hopping. Than again he thought maybe I am being too critical of the poor thing, after all she is just an excitable creature.
" Just Imagine talking to people far away over a little tiny box in your hand." Geronimo nodded his head in agreement but also realized that there really wasn't much need for a cell phone in Make Believe land, but that is exactly what he thought of the Garmin and look how much use he gets out of that gadget, and of course there is his little apple that he uses to receive and send e-mails. He would be lost without it. It sure is hard to get used to change.

He didn't have long to dilly dally around thinking about all this new fangled stuff because he got a call from Lil Boss that they had a job to do. Now what in heavens' name could he do? He didn't have to wait long for before he knew it he was on his way to earth in the middle of a giant tornado. The wind howled and the rain poured. Houses were torn apart, cars turned over, trees bent like toothpicks and animals flying through the air. It was indeed a very frightening affair. He and Lil Boss were plunked right down in the center of a devastated area in a place called Oklahoma. He later found out this was Tornado Alley.

There were several families huddled together in a big warehouse.
Adults were shouting and fighting among themselves over places where they could hunker down, they were cursing and shaking their fists in the air at God for bringing the storm. The village minister was trying to get them to settle down and to work together. His pleas fell on deaf ears for anger filled their hearts. The children were huddled up in a corner and crying from fear. The louder the big people shouted the louder the children cried.

In the middle of all this darkness and despair Geronimo witnessed Lil Boss's miracles of peace, for as He floated through this mess a bright light preceded him. As he touched the adult’s humans they began to cease their destructive behavior and knelt in prayer.

Geronimo took his cue from Lil Boss and sprinkled fairy dust on all the children. One by one they stopped crying, took one another's hand and made a circle. Geronimo was in the middle of the circle talking softly. " Don't be afraid little ones, for no matter how bad things may get, God is always there to protect you." " The storm can't last forever but how we behave will have lasting effects." To his amazement Geronimo heard the children begin to sing. All of a sudden He felt goose bumps go up his arms. This was the first time he ever had this happen, for elves are usually immune to the same emotions as humans.

Soon the wind and rain stopped!! The sun began to shine brightly chasing away all the gloom and doom. The big people began to praise God, while the children began to play ring around the rosy.
One by one they gathered up their children and headed for the village church. They went to Thank God for sparing them from this horrible storm.

Geronimo and Lil Boss were getting ready to leave when the minister approached them to let them know he could take over now and really appreciated all their help. He was a nice man who was able to see Lil Boss and Geronimo. Geronimo thought to himself If only all the big people could be like the minister the world would certainly be a happier place.

Now how to get home? Lil Boss instructed Geronimo to get on his shoulder and he began to walk into the clouds, before long he dropped Geronimo off in Make Believe Land and with a smile, a wave, and a thank you disappeared from sight.

Geronimo was jolted by the sound of his cell phone ringing. He reached in his bag and sure enough it was Rick returning his call. Geronimo was delighted to hear his big booming voice. As they chatted and Geronimo thanked him again for the cell phone he realized yes this would come in handy. He thought he would print up cards with his e-mail address and cell phone number on it. That way the children could reach him faster. It sure was good to be home.
