Geronimo's Tales by Carol G Oliver

A Wonderful Visit on St Patricks Day

It was a quiet day as Geronimo waited for a message from the children, however he heard a great commotion on earth with drums playing and bands marching for they were practicing for something called St Patrick’s day. Now this peaked his curiosity so he packed his fairy wings in a suitcase and caught a moonbeam to earth. He thought first of all that he would visit little Alyssa and her puppy named Puck. They lived in Florida and it was quite warm but really a nice place to visit. Alyssa’s mother was a very gentle Lady and didn't seem to mind that he had just popped in for a short time. He was amazed that the children’s mother could see him let alone converse with him, (that was unusual for adults).

He heard more about St. Patrick from them and decided he would visit the Irish Isle; after all maybe the leprechauns were some lost relatives. He learned how St Patrick had chased the snakes out of Ireland, had introduced Christianity to Ireland and also had given them the symbol of the Shamrock.

So he strapped on his fairy wings and took a flight to what he hoped was his home. Ireland was beautiful and the people were friendly but they couldn't see him. It seemed that all the little people were so busy polishing the rainbow and looking for a pot of gold, they didn't have time for him. How silly were these tiny people to be fighting among themselves, after all what was there to gain; he was disappointed to find they were in some sort of war among the big people too.

He could hardly wait to get back to America and on returning he heard of a lovely family in Maine that loved the animals as much as he did, so off he went to Gray, Maine. There were three lovely little girls, Danielle, Jannika , Hannah and a gracious Mother who welcomed him with open arms. They had dogs, a huge pig, chickens, cats and horses, and most of all they were well cared for in every way. While he was there he got to meet their grandparents (Mimi and Parki) and what a delight they were, for they were funny and loving: just what children and animals should have in their lives.

He also had a visit with their Uncle Ricky, his lovely wife Loren and their little boy Andrew. These were really cool people they were all so young at heart. Rick worked with young people all the time; Loren was a very talented artist Andrew showed so much promise in both areas. They had a marvelous picnic with the whole clan. Time flew by so fast because of the fun and laughter. Rick showed Geronimo his new Garmin and they compared it with his miniature one. He had to have everything tiny so he could carry it.

Geronimo really hated to leave but it was time to return and turn in his frequent flyer miles, after all he didn't want the big Boss to scold him. He promised to return and gave them his e-mail address (heaven) and asked the mother and the children to be sure and send him a letter.

However the children had one question they wanted to know how he could catch a moonbeam in the daytime. He answered with great authority “If you look very hard sometimes you can see the shadow of the moon in the daytime, there is always a moonbeam if you know where to look.” "You see, it is like you humans who have different airlines Delta, American, and Continental. Little folk like me have daytime, nighttime, sunbeam and moonbeam to name a few."

"However, adult humans cannot see any of us who traveled all the time because of a thing called prejudice. Their minds are closed to new and wonderful things, even among themselves. Anything different like Race, Religion, Gender (that means male or female) and sometimes money. Now isn't that foolish? " The children nodded their heads in agreement, the littlest one began to cry because she wanted Geronimo to stay forever. The other children comforted her for they realized that he needed to go back to Make Believe Land.

He taught them one last lesson and that was, they may never fly a moonbeam but if they tried really hard they could one day pay him a visit. All they had to do was clear away the clutter and go there in their minds. They had a wonderful thing that was part of their subconscious minds. That was Imagination, she kept you young. It seems that the older humans get, the more they forget this wonderful friend.
Reluctantly Geronimo packed his wings in his suitcase and headed for home, while blowing kisses to the lovely folks in Maine.
