Geronimo's Tales by Carol G Oliver

Strangers Who Care

Geronimo was answering all his mail, which there seemed to be a ton of today. One e-mail caught his eye and it was evident that there needed to be something done about situation on earth. Just outside of New Jersey City there was a field where a lot of inhabitants lived. But stories about a certain couple were running rampant. The gossip was horrible and very hurtful. Gerry consulted with Lil Boss and it was decided that Geronimo had an individual who could straighten out the mess with a few good chores. This is how the story goes:

There once was a turtle and a rabbit that were the best of friends. No one could understand what they had in common. The turtle people did not see it and the rabbit people could not see it. But every time you saw one you saw the other. Pretty soon it got to be the talk of the field.

Having heard about this strange relationship a cub reporter came out to do a story for the Field Register. He listened intently while they explained that when they found themselves orphans they were the only two left on the road. The rabbits parents had been shot by hunters and dragged away by dogs, The turtle parents were run over by a car. In their sadness and sorrow they seemed to bond, for no one else seemed to care.

They were able to move the rabbit hutch into the field so no one would bother it and the rabbit slept in the hutch while the turtle slept beneath the hutch. It worked out perfectly for they both were safe and secure.

They had heard the rumors and the taunts by their fellow citizens and were more than glad to give the interview to the cub reporter. He seemed to understand because his parents were caught in a forest fire, which raged for days on end. Only because the fire rangers worked so hard were they able to survive.

The cub thought about this and remarked if they had perished I would have been an orphan too.
With that the turtle said, "If that ever happens look us up. We can always make room for more."

When the Field Register came out the headlines read "Orphanage on the Rise" contact Timothy Turtle and Rodney Rabbit proprietors.

Soon the little hutch was bustling with all sorts of animals not only from the field but also the Forest. Every single one of them were orphans and most of them were looking for love. Timothy and Rodney were like parents to a mixed tribe. Soon it became apparent that they needed at least five more hutches.

A Lumberjack by the name of Paul came by and offered to build some, free of charge. How wonderful Timothy and Rodney thought however the jack just kept building and building and soon they had a three-story hutch with four wings, just like a people hotel.

When the jack got ready to leave he brought a big bag of varied foods for the inhabitants.

He marched off into the forest no one knew where he came from but they all waved a fond farewell.

We all know where the lumberjack came from he was a buddy of Geronimo’s and was sent to assist in this situation.

You see Geronimo is just one of the Lord’s army to keep peace. But he has a lot of friends to help: angel, bear cub reporters, lumberjacks, you name it, they all are here to help.

The moral of this story is be careful what you say about people. It may come back to haunt you. Gossip is a terrible thing and only individuals can put a stop to it by never letting it start.
There is an old Indian philosophy that says don’t say anything about another until you have walked in their moccasins for a mile.
