Geronimo's Tales by Carol G Oliver

Geronimo Keeping the peace

Make Believe Land had been pretty quiet and really a little on the boring side as far as Geronimo was concerned. But like most places in the hearts and minds of children was content. His e-mail had been very empty which meant that the children were handling things nicely on their own. After checking thoroughly Geronimo decided to take a long nap. Just as he was about to put on the correct atmosphere and music he saw Angel Fairy running around frantically. Suddenly she came bursting on the scene and yelling at the top of her voice Geronimo! Geronimo! She nearly ran over him even though he was perched under a bon bon.
He approached her carefully so as not to excite her anymore. "OK, What is the problem?"
"I just heard", she exclaimed, "That the children are very upset with a certain Mayor on earth".
Geronimo scratched his head "Umm" he said. "I checked all my mail and saw no problem. “I have told you that unless the children notify us that they need our help we must let earthly matters take care of themselves. If we don't then we are interfering with the Lord's plan. Angel do you remember I explained all this to you?"
"If you are really concerned I will just take a little trip and investigate the situation but I can't promise I will intervene" After all it is just as important that I keep peace in Make Believe Land "Now what are the children upset about?"

Angel fairy shook her head to let him know that she did remember the time he explained things to her. She said softly "The children are really disturbed that the Mayor of their town in Florida was not going to allow a 4th of July parade and no fireworks." This had been the custom for decades (each decade is ten years).
With this Geronimo took his fairy wings, called a moonbeam and headed for Florida. Changing a custom this old certainly warranted a look-see.

Upon arriving Geronimo found that indeed the children were in a very somber mood. He was used to running, playing and laughing but none of this was happening. After listening to their
complaints Geronimo mused over the situation. His response was this "Children I can understand the reason for the abandonment of the fireworks because of the present fire danger however that should not curtail the parade".

Geronimo talked to the parents (remember they and the children were the only ones who could see Geronimo). So if he was going to work any magic it would have to be through the parents. With his encouragement the parents approached the Mayor to find out what the objection was to a parade.

It seems that it was a matter of cost; she did not want to have to get the cleaning crew out after a rowdy parade. Finally a medium position was reached in that the parents promised no horses or other animals that might dirty the streets, and the children could march along with the bands. They could carry flags, ride bicycles and sing but other than that they were to leave the area as clean as it was when the parade started. They took before and after pictures for the Mayor.

While Geronimo was in Florida he decided to drop in on Alyssa and Gabby to see how things were with them. They were both excited at the end of the school year and were looking forward to the summer. After reassuring himself that the problem with the parade no longer existed he decided to head for home. So with no further ado he summoned a moonbeam. Upon his return he told angel fairy what had been accomplished and he wrote a report for Lil Boss and the Lord. With this done, he settled in for that nap he tried to take.
